Violence continues in homes and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its victims include women, children and youth, Aboriginal women and children, older persons, persons with disabilities and others who are victims of violence because of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or economic status.
Vulnerable populations experience physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, spiritual and cultural violence, as well as verbal and financial abuse and neglect. However, accurate statistics regarding the prevalence of violence are difficult to obtain, as approximately only 10% of violence or abuse is ever reported.
