| The Schools
Act, 1997, allowed for the creation of school councils which form a
vital part of our education system. School councils consist of the
principal; parent, teacher and community representatives; and a student
representative if senior high school courses are taught at the school.
School councils reflect the changing structure of parent involvement in
schools. The purpose of the council is to develop policies and practices
which enhance the quality of school programs and the levels of student
achievement. Sections 25 and 26 of the Schools Act, 1997, outline
the structure and functions of school councils.
For more information about individual school councils, contact the particular school, your school board, the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils or the School Council Liaison Officer. Tracey Powell |
