The office of the minister consists of the Minister of Education, the deputy minister, and three assistant deputy ministers. These officials are responsible for administering the Department of Education and its legislation through its three branches. The Role of the Minister The Minister of Education is a member of Cabinet, a group of all ministers working with the Premier in an effort to help serve the needs of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. As a member of Cabinet, the minister has specific accountabilities related to the Department of Education. The minister sits on various committees, and a number of subcommittees of Cabinet, in varying capacities. When the House of Assembly is in session, the minister is involved in debate over issues of concern. The minister is a member of the party governing the province at any given time. Director of Communications The Director of Communications is responsible for the management, development, planning, execution and evaluation of communications programs to ensure that clientele, the public and staff, are fully informed about departmental policies, programs and services. Executive Offices The Role of the Deputy Minister The deputy minister is the permanent head of the department and is accountable for the administration of the department. The position is an advisory one to the minister on policy, programs and legislation. The deputy minister is expected to contribute to the development of overall government policy by sitting on various government committees. The deputy minister also works with other provincial and inter-provincial organizations and associations. The deputy minister's position is non-partisan. The Role of the Assistant Deputy Ministers The assistant deputy ministers are accountable for policy development, the establishment of objectives and the planning and implementation of programs within particular branches.
