This office is responsible
for the identification and positioning of all Crown titles
issued by the Department in a digital
file format for integration with the Crown Lands' Geographic
Information System (GIS). This information is used to assist the
public in determining the location and ownership for specific
parcels of land. The information is also used by Crown Titles
Preparation Office to ensure that no encroachments exist between
applications for land and land that has already been issued by
the Crown. The office provides support to Crown Lands
Administration and the Regional Lands Offices for the resolution
of property boundary overlaps and prepares special
plans and exhibits for use in court proceedings. Technical
advice is also provided to map users who experience difficulty
in identifying original grant or lease boundaries. A major
challenge of the program is the determination of the
geographical location of land titles issued in the 19th and
early 20th centuries when good quality mapping was not
available. In addition, surveying instruments and methods were
not as advanced as those employed by today's cartographers and
surveyors which further adds to the difficulty of accurately
locating older titles.
