Timber scaling is defined as the measurement of timber to determine its volume
or mass. The procedures used in scaling follow clearly defined rules that are
monitored and reviewed by staff of the Forest Resources.
Scaling plays an important role in the forest industry as it
is common practice to pay loggers based on volumes harvested, hence the need for
accurate scaling. Scale data is also used by forestry staff to
determine crown stumpage as well as verification of allowable annual harvest.
All timber scalers in the Province are licenced by the Department and are
responsible to submit monthly scale reports and to ensure all measurements are
carried out in conjunction with the Provincial Scaling Manual. Traditional scale
measurements using the wooden stick are still prevalent, however new technology
such as digital remote scanners and weight-sampling are being investigated for
future use.
