  Civil Law Division

The Civil Law Division is the Provincial Government's full service law firm, which provides legal advice and services to government departments and agencies in matters of civil law. Civil law is a term used to describe all legal matters that are not criminal in nature.

The Civil Law Division is responsible for:

  • Providing legal advice and services to government;
  • Preparing complex commercial documentation;
  • Providing legal advice on constitutional matters including the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; conducting civil and constitutional litigation, representing the government in cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, federal courts, all superior provincial courts, and administrative boards and tribunals in a wide variety of matters;
  • Providing legal advice respecting Crown liability as a result of government programs and services;
  • Participating in federal-provincial negotiations on selected topics;
  • Providing legal advice and opinions respecting the development of legislation and regulations;
  • Providing freedom of information and protection of privacy services for government; and
  • Providing public services for change of name, commissioners for oaths, justices of the peace, notaries public.

Articling Program

The Civil Division and the Pubic Prosecutions Division of the Department of Justice work together to offer a comprehensive Articling Program.
