About The Program:
-
The management and
protection of salmonids in Newfoundland and Labrador is a
federal government responsibility. Regulations pertaining to salmonids in Newfoundland and Labrador are
set out under the federal Fisheries Act. Our
provincial government has played a significant role in the
enforcement of these regulations and protection of inland fish.
-
The province’s IFEP mandate is to
apprehend those individuals who are having the most serious negative
impact on our Atlantic salmon and trout stocks, through their
illegal poaching activities (i.e. illegal netting,
commercialization, etc.). These illegal activities are occurring in
coastal (i.e. bays, harbors, estuaries, etc.) and inland waters
(i.e. streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, etc.). The IFEP will continue
to target these individuals regardless of their geographical
location in an effort to conserve and protect our valuable inland
fish resource.
-
During the 2004 angling season, the
provincial government implemented the Inland Fish Enforcement
Program (IFEP). The program consists of a dedicated team of highly
trained and skilled enforcement officers who have a strong
enforcement background. The team focuses their attentions on the
more serious types of offences such as illegal netting and illegal
commercialization of salmonids. The program has been in place now
for a number of years and there is much support from the
user/conservation groups on this initiative.
