Why do we Need Land Claims Settlements?
There are no treaties between the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada, and the Labrador Innu or the Inuit. As a result there is a great deal of uncertainty for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people around the issue of land claims. When provincial and federal governments and the Aboriginal peoples have agreed to the terms of land claims settlements this economic and social uncertainty can be erased.
The Province's goal in negotiations is to remove all doubt as to the ownership and control of the land and resources. Land claims agreements can do that. They provide the certainty to develop the resources and invest in the growth of this region and the Province while giving the Labrador Innu and Inuit the tools they need for self-reliance.

The best way to reach fair land claims settlements is through negotiations... not through the courtroom... not through protests.

Together we can define the rules and responsibilities under which the land and the resources can best be managed. That is why the Province supports land claims agreements. They are the blueprints for a just and sustainable future for all the people of the Province.
