Still and Moving Images Section

Collection Closure

BackgroundSlides, film, and movie reel

The extensive collection of photographs, photographic negatives and glass plates was organized into a "Photographs" section in the mid 1970s. After the steady growth of the collection, particularly in the medium of film, the Section acquired a certain autonomy under the name "Still and Moving Images" section.

The Still Images part of the collection contains more than 400,000 photographic items including not only a large collection of photographic prints but also an equally large collection of glass plate negatives. The collection also contains a quantity of examples of earlier forms of still images such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. There are also glass lantern slides, film negatives, slides and albums.

Notable Collections

Getting ready to go fishing. (PANL collection, VA22-4)This Section is rich in the still images of photographers Holloway, Parsons and Hayward who depicted, in great detail, life in Newfoundland from the latter part of the nineteenth century up to Confederation with Canada in 1949. In addition, the Moving Images collection contains significant feature films such as "Viking" and "The Great Arctic Seal Hunt".

The Moving Images collection contains approximately five-thousand 8mm, 16mm and 35mm films. Examples are from such major sources as Atlantic Films and Electronics Ltd. (Government public relations films from the 1950s and 1960s), Sir Leonard Outerbridge (a collection of personal and newsworthy events), Winter / Munn (a collection of pre-Confederation special events), and the Extension Media of Memorial University of Newfoundland (a collection of 16mm film footage from the 1960s to mid 1970s along with the Decks Awash series).
